A screenplay page is divided into eight vertical strips, and every scene's length is expressed in those strips — "2 2/8" is two and a quarter pages. It looks archaic, but it survives because it works: eighths are fine-grained enough to schedule with and coarse enough to eyeball off the page. The stripboard's day breaks, the call sheet's scene table, and the production report all speak eighths.
The estimate that matters is the daily total. A day that adds up to 3–5 pages of drama is a plan; a 9-page day between two 2-page days is a schedule that hasn't met reality yet. When you're totalling scene lengths by hand to find day breaks, this calculator does the fraction math — and when the schedule changes daily, that's the point where a connected stripboard starts paying for itself.

Divide the page vertically into eight equal strips and count how many the scene occupies, rounding up. Anything that spans a full page is 8/8. Screenwriting software with production features can compute this automatically from a locked script.
Rules of thumb: narrative drama 3–5 pages/day, single-camera comedy ~5, documentary-style 8+, commercials often below 2 (setups dominate). Night work, stunts, kids, animals, and company moves all push the number down.
Because scene lengths are the scheduling currency: day breaks on the stripboard are chosen so each day totals a realistic page count, and the call sheet lists each scene's eighths so every department can gauge the day's weight.
